Calculate
solubility
Solubility is about how much of a substance that can be dissolved in a
solvent forming a homogeneous mixture of only one phase.
The solubility of a substance is temperature dependant - normally a
substance dissolves better in high temperatures. Typical
solubility concentrations used are : grams of solute per kg of
solvent , g/(dL solvent) , molarity etc. A solvent (solute) is a
substance dissolved in another substance.
Example: g/Kg
Question: 1.599 grams of LiF will dissolve in 1 kg of water.
Calculate solubility.
Answer: The solubility of LiF is 1.599g/(kg solvent)
Example: mol/Kg to g/Kg
Question: 0.06164 moles of LiF will dissolve in 1 kg of water.
Calculate solubility
FW LiF = 6.94 + 19.0 = 25.94
g/mol
Answer: The solubility of LiF is 0.06164mol * 25.94g/mol =
1.599g/(kg solvent)
Example: Ksp to mol/Kg to g/Kg
The solubility product Ksp of LiF = 0.0038 Calculate solubility
The expression for the solubility product: Ksp=[Li]
[F]
[Li,F] = (Ksp)^0.5 = 0.0038^0.5 = 0.06164mol
FW LiF = 6.94 + 19.0
= 25.94 g/mol
Answer: The solubility of LiF is 0.06164mol * 25.94g/mol =
1.599g/(kg solvent)
