Examples of chemical word equations , chemical symbols , state symbols and balancing equations
Example 1
Chemical word equation: Aluminum + Hydrochloric acid > Aluminum chloride + Hydrogen
Equation of chemical symbols: Al + HCl > AlCl3 + H2
Equation containing state symbols: Al(s) + HCl(aq) > AlCl3(s) + H2(g)
Balancing equation: 2Al(s) + 6HCl(aq) = 2AlCl3(s) + 3H2(g)
Example 2
Chemical word equation: Ethane + Oxygen -> Carbon dioxide + Water
Equation of chemical symbols: C2H6 + O2 > CO2 + H2O
Equation containing state symbols: C2H6 (g) + O2(g) > CO2(g) + H2O(l)
Balancing equation: 2C2H6 + 7O2 = 4CO2 + 6H2O
State symbols: (g) = gas , (s) = solid , (l) = liquid , (aq) = aqua (dissolved in water)
Note: Chemistry software CHEMIX School uses '>' (greater then) instead of the normal arrow '-->' for separating left and right side of the equation.
